It was the first successful cesarean section that we know of.

It was about the year 1500 and the wife of pig castrator Jacob Nufer was in labor.

She had been struggling for the birth of her baby for days now. Thirteen ( I cannot believe that number, but history says so ) midwives had been already called to help and none could complete the process.

Nufer basically knew how to help his wife because he had acquired extensive knowledge and skills through his work.

Pig castrators had long performed C-sections on difficult births of animals such as mares, cows, bitches, sheep and sows.

They did this to save the young when it was feared that the mother might die.

Midwives were also familiar with this technique, but until the early 16th century, cesarean delivery was allowed only on dead mothers.

What we do today-saving the mother's life at the risk of the baby's death-was strictly forbidden.

Jacob was desperate.

He finally managed to get urgent permission from the authorities to perform the procedure on his living wife.

He used a razor blade to do the procedure.

Mother and child survived.

The mother later had five more children born by natural childbirth.

This means that Jacob must have been able to sew up the uterus very well.

And with his courage he saved not only his wife and son, but millions of others later.

It always takes people who have the courage to fight against the existing rules.

The two women were gang-raped in a field, a tribal organisation has alleged. The execution of women by the Nazis during World War II This is a tribute to the amazing courage of so many young women during World War II who were put to death for plotting and fighting against the Nazis, as resistance fighters, partisans and activists in towns and concentration camps. It is estimated that more than 4,000 women of various ages were hanged by Nazi forces between 1939 and 1945. Many more were shot or guillotined and many were tortured before minimal or non-existent trials.  They could be sentenced to death by People's Courts and executed within prisons, by the commandants of concentration camps or by military commanders in the field and summarily executed, usually in public. The Muskogee Tribe had a custom of cradling their pappooses among the swaying branches of birch trees. This protected their babies from ground insects, the sun, and wild animals.  After first finding it funny, she soon learned all the great reasons for this practice and marveled at the beauty of it.  Effie watched the swaying and soothing motion of the topmost branches of the trees. The capture of brave Russian officer Rosinski This is a shocking image and I apologize in advance for sharing it, but here’s one that truly got to me… in Belarus, 1918, after WWI had already ended, the brave Russian officer Rosinski was captured by the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks tortured the captain, likely to get information out of the man, which he bravely refused to give. After that, they simply continued with the torture out of some sick sense of innate cruelty. He was ‘the enemy’ and he was at their mercy, so they brutally murdered their captive.
