 Just a couple of days ago, I heard a horrible and very sad story.

An Afghan patient came for a medical consultation in my girlfriend’s hospital.

His medical file said that he missed a part of his penis — including most of the glans. He needed some sort of reconstructive surgery, because it looked really horrible down there — as if a bomb had exploded in his groins.

And in fact, it had.

As a young boy of 7 years old, a bomb had fallen on his school while he and his friends were sitting in class.

Some of the kids died, and he was severely wounded in the groin.

His penis was partially amputated in the accident, and as such the life of a 7-year-old boy was taken hostage by a horrible wound.

(Can you imagine this — your 7-year-old suffering from this kind of ordeal ? I can’t stop thinking about that little boy in class, and what was coming from the heavens.)

My girlfriend sent him to a surgeon who is specialized in this kind of thing, and I really hope he is helped in some way.

So that that little boy can smile again — if only a little.

  A revolutionary surgery took place on this day 64 years ago, changing the world of medicine as we know it.  For the first time ever, a machine was inserted into the human body in lieu of a body part that was no longer able to function correctly.  In 1958, two doctors, cardiac surgeon Ake Senning and medical device engineer Rune Elmqvist, implanted the first ever internal cardiac pacemaker into the body of Swedish engineer Arne Larsson. Larsson’s surgery was done to treat his Stokes-Adams syndrome, a condition that slows the heartbeat and decreases blood flow to the brain, resulting in potentially fatal fainting spells.  This revolutionary internal pacemaker was the size of a hockey puck and used two transistors that would deliver tiny shocks to the heart.  On this day 20th February 1942.  For not revealing the whereabouts of his commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel J. J. Scanlan, Japanese troops executed Australian prisoner of war John R. Gray at Rabaul, New Britain by slashing his chest open and removing his heart while he was still alive. The Battle for Rabaul was a complete success for the invading Japanese forces. Of the over 1,000 Australian soldiers taken prisoner, around 160 were massacred on or about 4 February 1942 in four separate incidents around Tol and Waitavalo. Six men survived these killings and later described what had happened to a Court of Inquiry. The Australian government concluded the prisoners were marched into the jungle near Tol Plantation in small groups and were then bayoneted by Japanese soldiers. The Muskogee Tribe had a custom of cradling their pappooses among the swaying branches of birch trees.
