Pupil's tongue cut after police torture'

MBABANE – A 19-year old Form V pupil had his tongue cut into two while in the hands of the police who had held him and three of his schoolmates in connection to dagga.

The pupil’s tongue had to be stitched back together at the Mankayane Government Hospital, where he was rushed to by the police last Tuesday.

Besides his incised tongue, the pupil also had to be treated for bruises on the neck as well as a swollen face, and these were allegedly inflicted by the police.

However, the police have denied responsibility for the pupil’s injuries and say he got injured while running away from them.

The names of the pupil and that of the school, which is situated in the Manzini region, have been withheld to protect the learner.

According to sources, police were called to the school after one pupil was found to be in possession of dagga and when interrogated by the school authorities, he is said to have named three of his colleagues as his ‘smoking partners’.

"When the police arrived they took all four pupils with them. Two of the pupils are boarders while the others are day-scholars," the source said.

However, the source said the school authorities were shocked when later told by the police that one of the pupil’s had been hospitalised for injuries that were not explained to them.

The pupil’s father Jeffrey Msweli said they got to know of his child’s injuries after they received a call from the school’s deputy principal on Tuesday night.

"I wanted to know if the child was okay and the deputy said he didn’t know. Fifteen minutes later he called to say the child was alive but admitted to hospital," he said.

Msweli said he drove with his wife from Pigg’s Peak, where they live, at around 11pm to Mankayane to see what had happened.

"When we got to the hospital we found that the child was badly injured as his tongue was cut and it had to be stitched," he said.

He said they never received a clear explanation when they enquired from the police and the school authorities as to what had happened to cause such injuries to the pupil.

"Even up to now we have not had an explanation. Even the police had no answers. The boy, however, told us they were suffocated with a tube. He even has marks on his neck as proof," Msweli said.

Nurse trade unionist Sibusiso Lushaba, who works at Mankayane Government Hospital, confirmed attending to such a matter.

"The boy was brought to the hospital by the police on Tuesday at around 6:30pm. He was badly hurt and I attended to him," Lushaba said.

Angry parents want answers from cops, school authorities

MBABANE – A meeting is expected to be held today between the pupil’s parents, police and the school authorities regarding the boy’s injuries.

The Form Five pupil’s father said they expected the police to be present because the pupils allege that there were statements uttered by the officers that they would like to be tackled during the meeting. "We need to meet with them to get clarity. During the interrogation, the boys say they were interrogated by seven police officers but now we hear that there were only two officers," said Jeffrey Msweli one of the boys’ father.

He said he was also unhappy that the school authorities decided to call the police instead of the parents after the children were found to have done wrong.

"They should have called us instead of the police so we will also find out how that happened," he said.

He was trying to escape - cop

MBABANE – Police have alleged that the pupil got his tongue cut when he tried to escape from the Mankayane Police Station.

Police PRO Superintendent Wendy Hleta said the pupil bolted out of the police station while police were interrogating them about the dagga they had been found with.

"When the police were interrogating the pupils, they kept pointing fingers at one another. This one pupil then ran out of the office and jumped a fence but fell in the process. When police caught him they found that he was bleeding," Hleta said. She said there was no reason that the police could have caused the pupil’s injuries because they do not beat up suspects.

However, the pupil’s father said he was not satisfied with the police’s explanation: "The police failed to explain how his tongue got cut if he fell. Things nearly got out of hand when they gave this explanation."
