The ghostly, tortured, face of Patrick Hamilton burned onto into the masonry of St.Salvator's, St. Andrews.

Patrick Hamilton was one of the very first Protestant preachers in Scotland who, in 1528, was arrested and tried for heresy, bravely accepting both his guilt and his death sentence.

The authorities were concerned that if they spent too long preparing for his execution, powerful friends might rescue the condemned man. It was decided that he should be burned at the stake immediately and a pyre was hastily prepared outside St Salvator’s Chapel. 

Unfortunately, it was a damp day and the freshly gathered wood burned slowly. Hamilton stood for hours in agony amongst the smouldering pile. To speed things along, the executioners threw gunpowder on the embers which exploded, but still didn’t end his torture. 

Eventually, things were too much for poor Hamilton to bear and he pled for death, allegedly crying "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!" Almost immediately the preacher died, but the excruciating pain of his 6-hour burning is said to have left a lasting mark. When the smoke cleared, the impression of a tortured face had appeared on the wall of St Salvator's.

  A revolutionary surgery took place on this day 64 years ago, changing the world of medicine as we know it.  For the first time ever, a machine was inserted into the human body in lieu of a body part that was no longer able to function correctly.  In 1958, two doctors, cardiac surgeon Ake Senning and medical device engineer Rune Elmqvist, implanted the first ever internal cardiac pacemaker into the body of Swedish engineer Arne Larsson. Larsson’s surgery was done to treat his Stokes-Adams syndrome, a condition that slows the heartbeat and decreases blood flow to the brain, resulting in potentially fatal fainting spells.  This revolutionary internal pacemaker was the size of a hockey puck and used two transistors that would deliver tiny shocks to the heart.  On this day 20th February 1942.  For not revealing the whereabouts of his commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel J. J. Scanlan, Japanese troops executed Australian prisoner of war John R. Gray at Rabaul, New Britain by slashing his chest open and removing his heart while he was still alive. The Battle for Rabaul was a complete success for the invading Japanese forces. Of the over 1,000 Australian soldiers taken prisoner, around 160 were massacred on or about 4 February 1942 in four separate incidents around Tol and Waitavalo. Six men survived these killings and later described what had happened to a Court of Inquiry. The Australian government concluded the prisoners were marched into the jungle near Tol Plantation in small groups and were then bayoneted by Japanese soldiers. At the nearby Waitavalo Plantation, another group of Australian prisoners were shot. The pictures they took were published all over the world and have continued to shape the public’s image of the concentration and extermination camps to this day. They also came to serve as evidence of the National Socialist crimes. The war correspondents were as shocked as the American soldiers by the conditions they discovered in Buchenwald. Margaret Bourke-White, who worked for Life Magazine, later recalled: “I kept telling myself that I would believe the indescribably horrible sight in the courtyard before me only when I had a chance to look at my own photographs.  Just a twist- Davy Crockett's older sister, Effie Crockett was invited to help some mothers in the Muskogee Tribe.  Once she arrived in camp, Effie laughed at what she saw. The Muskogee Tribe had a custom of cradling their pappooses among the swaying branches of birch trees. This protected their babies from ground insects, the sun, and wild animals.  After first finding it funny, she soon learned all the great reasons for this practice and marveled at the beauty of it.  Effie watched the swaying and soothing motion of the topmost branches of the trees. A dead tree, blasted by a bomb, located ideally near the trenches was chosen.  The tree was then photographed and extensively studied, measurements taken and sketches made. A hollow, steel replica was then made in the workshop far behind the lines.  At night, under the cover of darkness and artillery fire, the real tree was felled and the fake one installed in its place.
