 The negative effect of bad surgeon


I was operating on a patient to remove his kidney.

The patient had had multiple surgeries in the past on his kidney and at this point was just a continuous source of infection- it no longer functioned.

The patient wanted me to remove it.

I removed the kidney laparoscopically and opened it to see what was inside.


I found this:

I was shocked.

It was a laser fiber that had broken inside the patient while being operated on by another surgeon 18 years prior. It had been left to form a stone and caused endless infections.

After the surgery, I informed the patient as to what I had discovered- he knew right away who the surgeon had been.

It is very sad to have your kidney damaged and your life affected because of a bad surgeon who didn’t have the appropriate ethical guidelines.

He could have referred the patient to someone else so the problem could be fixed before the damage became permanent.

  A revolutionary surgery took place on this day 64 years ago, changing the world of medicine as we know it.  For the first time ever, a machine was inserted into the human body in lieu of a body part that was no longer able to function correctly.  In 1958, two doctors, cardiac surgeon Ake Senning and medical device engineer Rune Elmqvist, implanted the first ever internal cardiac pacemaker into the body of Swedish engineer Arne Larsson. Larsson’s surgery was done to treat his Stokes-Adams syndrome, a condition that slows the heartbeat and decreases blood flow to the brain, resulting in potentially fatal fainting spells.  This revolutionary internal pacemaker was the size of a hockey puck and used two transistors that would deliver tiny shocks to the heart. The Japanese had held two of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands for nearly a year—but now we’d won one back. The second would soon follow. The Battle of Attu was the only land battle fought in North America during World War II, yet somehow it has earned the tag, “The Forgotten Battle.” How can that be? We suffered more than 3,000 casualties, including 549 dead, at Attu. Shouldn’t more Americans know about it? And how did World War II make its way to the Aleutian Islands, anyway? It was a very simple instrument that was used to tear a victim's skin apart.  The victim would be naked and tied leaving him or her completely helpless. Then the torturers began the, sometimes public, act of mutilation. They often began with the limbs and slowly moved on to the chest, back, neck and finally the face. In short, the Spanish Tickler or Cat's Paw, is nothing but an extension to the torturer's hand, it had spikes which were sharp enough to tear through anything in their path.
