A PAPUAN SOLDIER HOLDS THE DECAPITATED HEAD OF A JAPANESE SOLDIER, 1945.


Bernard Harry Gilbert (serial # 39202990) was born in 1923 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943 at the age of 18, attending training at San Luis, Obispo, California.

He served with the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. During his service he was wounded at New Guinea in June 1944.

He reached the rank of Tech 2. Bernard had two older brothers, born in Tacoma, Washington, that served in the Canadian Army during WWII. His brothers were James Cameron Gilbert, who was wounded while serving with the Canadian Infantry, and Charles Frederick Gilbert, who served in the Canadian Armored Service Corps.

The collection and information was provided by Robert J. Gilbert, Bernard's nephew. Robert also served in the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Sergeant Major. Collection includes one bound album with 150 photos, and an additional 50 loose photographs.

 Eighty years ago today, a massive blast rocked the ground, spilled burning oil into the water, and shot flames into the sky above an Oahu marshaling yard known as West Loch. Sailors frantically searched for enemy aircraft or submarines as more explosions raised a thousand-foot-high pillar of fire, sparking fears of "a second Pearl Harbor." No enemy appeared, but the conflagration continued into the night, punctuated by occasional explosions and wailing sirens. Military and civilian personnel speculated about the explosion but received no solid information. This was by design, and the true story would not be widely known for many years. The execution of women by the Nazis during World War II This is a tribute to the amazing courage of so many young women during World War II who were put to death for plotting and fighting against the Nazis, as resistance fighters, partisans and activists in towns and concentration camps. It is estimated that more than 4,000 women of various ages were hanged by Nazi forces between 1939 and 1945. Many more were shot or guillotined and many were tortured before minimal or non-existent trials.  They could be sentenced to death by People's Courts and executed within prisons, by the commandants of concentration camps or by military commanders in the field and summarily executed, usually in public.
