A PAPUAN SOLDIER HOLDS THE DECAPITATED HEAD OF A JAPANESE SOLDIER, 1945.


Bernard Harry Gilbert (serial # 39202990) was born in 1923 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943 at the age of 18, attending training at San Luis, Obispo, California.

He served with the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. During his service he was wounded at New Guinea in June 1944.

He reached the rank of Tech 2. Bernard had two older brothers, born in Tacoma, Washington, that served in the Canadian Army during WWII. His brothers were James Cameron Gilbert, who was wounded while serving with the Canadian Infantry, and Charles Frederick Gilbert, who served in the Canadian Armored Service Corps.

The collection and information was provided by Robert J. Gilbert, Bernard's nephew. Robert also served in the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Sergeant Major. Collection includes one bound album with 150 photos, and an additional 50 loose photographs.
