A PAPUAN SOLDIER HOLDS THE DECAPITATED HEAD OF A JAPANESE SOLDIER, 1945.


Bernard Harry Gilbert (serial # 39202990) was born in 1923 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943 at the age of 18, attending training at San Luis, Obispo, California.

He served with the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. During his service he was wounded at New Guinea in June 1944.

He reached the rank of Tech 2. Bernard had two older brothers, born in Tacoma, Washington, that served in the Canadian Army during WWII. His brothers were James Cameron Gilbert, who was wounded while serving with the Canadian Infantry, and Charles Frederick Gilbert, who served in the Canadian Armored Service Corps.

The collection and information was provided by Robert J. Gilbert, Bernard's nephew. Robert also served in the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Sergeant Major. Collection includes one bound album with 150 photos, and an additional 50 loose photographs.

The naked body of the middle-aged man, revealed bruises, raising suspicion that he was heavily dragged on the ground before being tied to the tree. The Bolsheviks tortured the captain, likely to get information out of the man, which he bravely refused to give. After that, they simply continued with the torture out of some sick sense of innate cruelty. He was ‘the enemy’ and he was at their mercy, so they brutally murdered their captive. From the very beginning of the war and almost until its end, German snipers have always been equipped better than the Soviet ones, and 100% German optics both then and now surpassed ours, Zeiss (Karl Zeiss) optics was rightfully considered the best.  Vasily Zaitsev is one of the best snipers of the Second World War, who destroyed more than two hundred German soldiers in a month and a half.  Zaitsev's legendary confrontation with the German supersniper would later be called the most famous sniper duel of the war.  On this day 20th February 1942.  For not revealing the whereabouts of his commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel J. J. Scanlan, Japanese troops executed Australian prisoner of war John R. Gray at Rabaul, New Britain by slashing his chest open and removing his heart while he was still alive. The Battle for Rabaul was a complete success for the invading Japanese forces. Of the over 1,000 Australian soldiers taken prisoner, around 160 were massacred on or about 4 February 1942 in four separate incidents around Tol and Waitavalo. Six men survived these killings and later described what had happened to a Court of Inquiry. The Australian government concluded the prisoners were marched into the jungle near Tol Plantation in small groups and were then bayoneted by Japanese soldiers. At the nearby Waitavalo Plantation, another group of Australian prisoners were shot.
