It's easy to write off famous groupies off as clichés. Pop culture tends to paint them as airheaded or sex-crazed with little care to capture the actual experiences of women who lived the life.

Decades after the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll lifestyle that fueled the music scene of the '60s, '70s, and '80s, notable rock groupies like Chris O'Dell and Pamela Des Barres are sharing the real stories of how they served as mistresses and muses to some of the most beloved bands of all time. Though they can't compete with the conquests of rock's biggest groupie, they shed new light on the entire lifestyle

The words of O'Dell and Des Barres go beyond the simple question of, "Why do groupies do what they do?" By telling these stories in their own words, they reclaim the narratives about them. Though the wildest groupie stories may have a hint of truth, first-hand accounts show how these women are more than stereotypes.

The Japanese had held two of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands for nearly a year—but now we’d won one back. The second would soon follow. The Battle of Attu was the only land battle fought in North America during World War II, yet somehow it has earned the tag, “The Forgotten Battle.” How can that be? We suffered more than 3,000 casualties, including 549 dead, at Attu. Shouldn’t more Americans know about it? And how did World War II make its way to the Aleutian Islands, anyway? It was a very simple instrument that was used to tear a victim's skin apart.  The victim would be naked and tied leaving him or her completely helpless. Then the torturers began the, sometimes public, act of mutilation. They often began with the limbs and slowly moved on to the chest, back, neck and finally the face. In short, the Spanish Tickler or Cat's Paw, is nothing but an extension to the torturer's hand, it had spikes which were sharp enough to tear through anything in their path. This instrument was very common in Spain, mostly during the Spanish Inquisition, although its use in France and England is well recorded, they often adopted different torture methods.   A revolutionary surgery took place on this day 64 years ago, changing the world of medicine as we know it.  For the first time ever, a machine was inserted into the human body in lieu of a body part that was no longer able to function correctly.  In 1958, two doctors, cardiac surgeon Ake Senning and medical device engineer Rune Elmqvist, implanted the first ever internal cardiac pacemaker into the body of Swedish engineer Arne Larsson. Larsson’s surgery was done to treat his Stokes-Adams syndrome, a condition that slows the heartbeat and decreases blood flow to the brain, resulting in potentially fatal fainting spells.  This revolutionary internal pacemaker was the size of a hockey puck and used two transistors that would deliver tiny shocks to the heart. Unfortunately, the first edition of this pacemaker would not last past 8 hours.
