Fish feel pain and deserve protections

UNDERWATER SUFFERING

Whether they are raised in industrial fish farms or caught in the wild, fish have zero legal protections in how they’re treated or slaughtered. Fish often live in complex social groups, they use tools and exhibit signs of anxiety and pain. However, fish are treated like commodities by the fishing industry.

FACTORY FISH FARMS
Most of the fish eaten today are raised inland or on ocean-based aquafarms, spending their entire lives confined in tightly packed environments. In the factory farm industry, fish suffer for up to two years in water that has high levels of ammonia and nitrates.

It is common that groups of fish will become infested with parasites which feed on the gills, organs, and blood of fish. Bacterial infections also run rampant.

INDUSTRIAL FISHING
Commercial fishing is cruelty to animals on a colossal scale, killing nearly a trillion animals worldwide every year. Ships the size of football fields use techniques such as longlining and gill nets.

In longlining, ships unreel up to 50 miles of line, each with hundreds of thousands of baited hooks. Gill nets, which range from 300 feet to seven miles in length, create large walls of nets that fish are unable to see. They inadvertently swim into them and many will suffocate or bleed to death.


CRUEL SLAUGHTER
In the United States, fish are not covered by the Humane Slaughter Act. This results in a wide variety of cruel slaughter methods dependent on industry, company, and species.


Fish are usually removed from the water and left to suffocate and die. They desperately attempt to escape as their gills collapse preventing them from being able to breathe. Larger animals, such as tuna and swordfish, are usually clubbed to death. This often leads to an animal being injured but regaining consciousness and the process having to be repeated several times.

The village had been occupied by the Germans during 1943. It shows a group of fifteen young German soldiers standing in a semicircle, carousing and laughing as one of their comrades emulates a sex act with an unidentified woman who may or may not be dead. The laughter of his comrades suggests approval for the actions of the man on the ground. "Square 2," an M4A3 medium tank assigned to Company B, 6th Tank Battalion, triggered a mine made from two 500-lb aerial bombs.  "The tank done a complete forward flip and landed on the turret and driver's hatch," said Sergeant Jack E. Gordon of Square 3. His M4A3 is seen in the background, vainly trying to get Square 2 back on its tracks. Tank commander Cpl. Paul Durham and loader Pvt. A dead tree, blasted by a bomb, located ideally near the trenches was chosen.  The tree was then photographed and extensively studied, measurements taken and sketches made. A hollow, steel replica was then made in the workshop far behind the lines.  At night, under the cover of darkness and artillery fire, the real tree was felled and the fake one installed in its place. The artillery fire also drowned out the noise of the work. During the WWI, both sides kept constant watch of the enemy lines for movement, but that was not an easy task.
